Miscarriage Management:
We’re Here For You
Miscarriage is one of the most common pregnancy experiences, affecting roughly 15–20% of clinically-recognized pregnancies. Yet, it is something many people go through in silence, without knowing what to expect or where to turn. If you’re reading this after a loss, or because something doesn’t feel right, we want you to know: what happened is not your fault. Not something you ate, not something you did, not something you could have prevented. You are not alone, and support is here.
What is a Miscarriage?
Miscarriage is the sudden loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week. Most miscarriages happen during the first trimester of pregnancy, which is about the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. In most cases, miscarriage is caused by chromosomal factors; nothing you did or could have done differently.
What Are the Signs?
Miscarriage can look and feel different for everyone. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all — you may not find out until an ultrasound, or you stop feeling pregnant. Other times, signs can include:
Vaginal bleeding or spotting
Severe belly pain or cramping
Passing fluid or tissue from the vagina
Bleeding during early pregnancy doesn’t always mean miscarriage, but if something feels off, don’t wait. Reach out to your health care provider right away to determine the cause.
What to Expect
No two miscarriages are the same. Cramping can range from mild to intense, bleeding can stop quickly or last several hours, and you may pass large blood clots, which can feel alarming, but is usually normal. Your health care provider can help you manage pain and discomfort and walk you through what’s happening at every step.
How We Can Help
At Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties, we offer comprehensive miscarriage management so you’re never left figuring this out on your own.
When you come to us, we start with an accurate diagnosis — ultrasound services are available at all of our health centers. If medically appropriate, we may advise monitoring hormone levels to help determine the right course of care for your specific situation. From there, we’ll talk through your management options together:
Expectant management: allowing the miscarriage to complete without medication or procedure, with our team monitoring your progress frequently. We may advise medical intervention at some point
Medication management: using medication to help the body complete the process
Procedural care: an in-office procedure to safely manage the miscarriage
Not sure where to start? We’ll help you understand each option and support whatever decision feels right for you. And because we know timing matters, we offer walk-in visits, same-day care, and next-day appointments.
We’re Here For You
Healing after a miscarriage, physically and emotionally, takes time, and whatever you’re feeling is valid. You don’t have to go through this alone. Our compassionate clinicians are skilled in providing sensitive and effective miscarriage management in a supportive environment.
